Stepping into
Jur, we were greeted by a cheerful bartender
who quickly welcomed us but warned us that the
restaurant would be filling up with a large
reservation of 31. To get to our chosen table
back by the kitchen, we followed the waiter
behind the bar, which gave us a taste of how
comfortable the evening was to be. Within a
few minutes two vodka tonics , were placed in
front of us along with menus. After a quick
scan, I ordered the green salad with goat cheese,
apples and a honey thyme dressing and Drew chose
the tomato and basil soup. We decided to share
the natural cheese fondue as our entrée.
When our appetizers were served accompanied
by a basket of soft and delicious bread, I ate
every bite of my salad and had to stop myself
from licking the plate. It was crisp and sweet,
topped with a full round of warm and creamy
dutch goat cheese crowned with pine nuts. I
dipped a piece of bread in the soup and was
impressed by the fresh tomato flavour, and subtle
hint of basil. As the room filled with people,
it became very loud but this was part of the
experience. As I waited for the fondue I admired
the décor, which was dark wood accented
by delft tiles, and soft lighting. A Jack Johnson
cd played providing great background music.
A few minutes later, a young waitress brought
out a ceramic fondue stand and lit the burner,
the waiter followed with the pot and placed
it down over the flame. We eagerly ripped into
the loaves of bread and dipped it into the hot
gooey cheese heavily accented with wine, not
for the faint of heart! Although I was getting
full, desert tempted me and I succumbed to the
white & dark chocolate mousse and mint sorbet,
Drew was drawn to the “ Soesjes”,
tiny cream puffs filled with vanilla ice-cream
and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Both were
delicious and paired with fluffy whipped cream,
and a crisp wafer cookie. All in all a great
meal, attentive service and I will be back to
check out their lunch specials. Total bill was
45.60 Euros.
Jur has the honour of being
listed as # 3 on the top ten list of Eeetcafes
in Amsterdam and now I understand why. AmsterdamEvents
also utilizes Jur as a regular stop for the
organized tourgroups.
