The Café America in is very much like it was when it opened in 1902. The Tiffany Glass lamps, the painted murals featuring Shakespeare’s Mid-summer night’s dreams and the quaint reading tables are all original characteristics of the Café America in. For over a 100 years the Café America in has been and still is a place to meet for young writers, musicians, actors and other artists. The Café America in is one of a few Art Deco styled restaurants in the city of Amsterdam.

A homey breakfast and lunch café run by a passionate lady with the unusual (male) name: Hein. There is a menu available, but ask politely and you can pretty much get anything you like, providing the ingredients are available. The soups, quiches and homemade pies are delicious. The fresh mint tea is a refreshing summertime treat. You will have to fight for one of the three small tables outside if the weather is nice, so come early. If you want to try something new with friends and colleagues, sign up for the evening cooking course, taught by Hein of course.

Great burgers, ice-cold beer and a museum's worth of rock memorabilia await you at the Hard Rock Cafe Amsterdam. Located near Leidseplein along Max Euweplein, the restaurant splits into three levels offering you the best gaze upon the canals. Excellent venue for an informal (private) evening with a great atmosphere. Staff is at all times very helpful and service minded.

The Spui offers several old-world-evocative eateries, but Esprit (part of the clothing chain of the same name) -- with its clean and modern "aluminum design" interior, and windows overlooking the bustling square -- does reach out to the homesick by offering contemporary American ciabatta sandwiches, juicy burgers, pastas, pizzas,fresh salads, and a children's menu.

Craving a Big Mac

or a bucket of the Colonels finest? There are plenty of fast food outlets where you can get a quick fix. Silly enough, unlike in North America, many chain fast food restaurants in Amsterdam will actually charge you .25-.40 for each package of ketchup or mayonnaise! You may want to reconsider and try one of the many local hamburger stands- they may or may not charge you a "condiment tax", but at least you are getting a little local flavor!
