One of 5 properties,
the Beiaard Café on Spui is a very popular
eating café amongst both locals and tourists
who are lucky enough to snag a seat. Although
the trolley lines are located just a few feet
away, it doesn’t seem to distract anyone
from focusing on their meals.
I had been wanting to the try spare-ribs, which
are featured in almost every menu in town, so
I ordered a full rack to split with Drew plus
two large Grolsch beers. After noticing a beautiful
cheese board on our neighbors table, I decided
to get that also. Our waitress was very busy
as she hurried to keep up with the entire patio
by herself, but we still received prompt attention.
The beers arrived cold and frosty, in tandem
with our cheese plate. I’m glad I was
hungry as I admired the chunks of brie, gouda,
and blue served with two different kinds of
grain bread, and garnished with walnuts and
cashews. There was even a small dish of feta
cheese and olives. After munching happily and
sipping my beer, our ribs arrived served with
a basket of home fries, and mayo for dipping.
The ribs were good, tender and slightly garlicky,
and there was homemade coleslaw as a vegetable.
Our waitress stopped by to check on us, and
I told her how much I was enjoying my dinner.
She said that if we ever wanted a really good hamburger,
that we should come back for lunch. So in short,
good food, good service and friendly atmosphere
earn Beiaard a place on my list of cafes to
return to.
Our bill came to 31.50 EU and I am looking forward
to trying the hamburger.
Three Weeks Later: Stopped by for the cheeseburger
recommended by our waitress.
It was wonderful, a thick homemade patty, topped
with cucumber, lettuce, cheese, ketchup and
mustard, served on a huge, fresh roll. Just
like Mom’s….
Not cheap at 7.50 EU, plus 2.00EU for a side
of fries, but compared to the others we have
tried…this wins, hands down!
And once again fast and efficient service, which
can be a real rarity in this city.
