Amsterdam decriminalized
soft drugs like marijuana and hash in the licensed shops
a long time ago, but still have strict laws and penalties
against the possession of hard drugs like cocaine, ecstasy,
heroin, etc. You must be 18 years old (with ID to prove
it) to enter the coffee shop and are allowed to purchase
up to 5 grams of hash or marijuana per person per day.
There are police that routinely do age checks and enforce
other rules.
There are three types of coffee shops:
- Juice Bars: serving fruit
juices, herbal teas, energy drinks- usually have a
quieter ambiance
- Traditional Coffee shops:
wooden benches, strong coffee, good music- great for
a quick stop
- Coffee shops with Alcohol:
Beer, sometimes liquor-for the experienced smoker
