NEW: CHECK OUT THE AMSTERDAM COFFEE SHOP REVIEWS!

Amsterdam decriminalized soft drugs like marijuana and hash in the licensed shops a long time ago, but still have strict laws and penalties against the possession of hard drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, etc. You must be 18 years old (with ID to prove it) to enter the coffee shop and are allowed to purchase up to 5 grams of hash or marijuana per person per day. There are police that routinely do age checks and enforce other rules.

There are three types of coffee shops:

  • Juice Bars: serving fruit juices, herbal teas, energy drinks- usually have a quieter ambiance
  • Traditional Coffee shops: wooden benches, strong coffee, good music- great for a quick stop
  • Coffee shops with Alcohol: Beer, sometimes liquor-for the experienced smoker

My favorite Amsterdam Coffee Shops:

Amnesia Herengracht 133- Moroccan decor and ambience, friendly staff

Cafe 420 De Kuil Oudebrugsteeg 27- serves drinks, great bartenders, good music

Dutch Flowers Singel 387 -serves beer, traditional pub style

The Noon Zieseniskade 22- Rasta feel, very laid back local crowd

Old Amsterdam Amstelstraat 35- really large selection on the menu, good coffee

Paradox Bloemdwarsstraat 1E- funky murals, friendly staff, organic food until 3:00

Rokerij II Singel 8- serves alcohol, cool hippie vibe

Rokerij IV Elandsgracht 53- asian decor, colorful lanterns, meditative trance music

Rookies Bar Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 145- Sports bar with beer, liquor, good sound system

The Smoker's Guide to Amsterdam is the number-one coffee shop guidebook. It's great bargain- the Coffee Shop Guide Book features maps, coupons and best-of lists. The book includes information about Amsterdam coffee shops,"smart shops", grow shops, hotels, Amsterdam pubs and nightlife.

A few things to keep in mind:

Most Amsterdam Pot is Strong
The marijuana in Amsterdam can be very potent, and if you are not used to it can make you very stoned.

Be a good guest
Just like at home, the locals probably don't want you smoking pot in front of their kids. There are some regular bars that will let you smoke pot, but it's not acceptable to smoke everywhere.

Pot does NOT make a good souvenir!
All the customs agents are wise to your shenanigans! Don't make the mistake to think you can sneak a few grams though- It just isn't worth it!
