| Although
Amsterdam dining can have it’s charm,
the standards of service are very different
from what you may have come to expect.
The attitude in most establishments is
very casual, and can become quite frustrating
if you are not prepared for it. Here are
a few things to keep in mind when dining
in Amsterdam.
• Service can be slow… that's
just the Amsterdam way....be patient!
• Check the bill before deciding
to tip, most places already include a
service charge of 14%- 19%.
• When you order coffee, you are
going to get some version of espresso,
in a tiny cup served with a cookie or
biscuit. Avoid The Coffee Company, it’s
a fake Starbucks and it’s awful!
• Try some pannekoeken (crepes)
but watch the price. They can be as much
as $12.00 EU, but you can get one for
as cheap as $3.00 EU.The Noordermarket
in the Jordaan makes them fresh on Saturday
mornings- delicious!
• Amsterdam supermarkets close at
8:00 pm, so make sure you stock up on
snacks during the day.
• If you want ice in your drink,
you have to specifically request it- so
tell your server. You'll probably only
get one or two ice cubes, but at least
you tried!
• French Fry Lover? Don’t
leave without trying Vlameese
Frites, served in a big paper
cone with a dollop of creamy mayo. Careful
though, these can become addictive!!
